"The Mental Health role of a School Psychologist: Counseling our Neurodiverse Students of Today”

Presenter: Dr. Chris Abildgaard, NCSP, LPC, NCC

The last few years have been a strain on nearly everyone, with routines disrupted, and stress and anxiety running high. For our neurodiverse students they are experiencing alarmingly high rates of mental health concerns which impact classroom performance. School Psychologists have an ethical duty to ensure appropriate mental health interventions are in place and conducted with efficacy across settings. This full day seminar will examine how neurodiversity, mental health interventions and cognitive self regulation need to co-exist to support our learners of today to ensure they experience as much educational success as possible. The intent of this full day seminar is to provide an overview of neurodiversity in the classroom, the role of the school psychologist in supporting a student’s mental health needs and examine mental health barriers which impact one’s educational success. Participants will leave with interventions, ways to increase one’s emotional “inventory” and consultative strategies when working with colleagues around mental health strategies for students in grades Pre-K through those transition years. Learning Objectives: 1. At the end of this seminar, attendees will be able to define neurodiversity, explain it's impact on education, and develop strategies in speaking with colleagues about differentiating approaches when working with neurodiverse students. 2. At the end of the seminar, attendees will reflect on their style of communication, tools which they provide and systems of active processing with students all for the purpose of promoting self motivation and cognitive regulation competencies. 3. At the end of the seminar, attendees will be able to better reflect and communicate language and social learning strategies to parents and caregivers for the purpose of increasing cognitive self regulation and overall engagement within the home environment

The DSM-5-TR: What’s New and What Has Changed?

Harriett H. Ford, Ph. D. , Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Section 504 Specialist, School Psychologist III, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), NCDPI Registry of Approved Providers for Traumatic Brain Injury Psychological ServicesLicensed Psychologist, NC Psychology Board

Diagnostic decision-making is one of the core functions of school psychologists. While most school districts do not require school psychologists to use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) for diagnostic purposes, the information within the DSM serves as an authoritative, evidenced-based resource for school professionals serving in a mental health role.  The primary goal of this presentation is to provide an overview of what is new and what has changed in the DSM, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). Recent research indicates that prevalence rates of clinically elevated depression and anxiety in children and adolescents (age < 18) are double of pre-COVID-19 pandemic estimates.  In addition, suicide attempts and intentional self-harm increased during the pandemic for children and adolescents.  Accordingly, continued allocation of resources to address child and adolescent mental health concerns is essential, including having a working knowledge of diagnoses that are prevalent among children and adolescents.

Learner Outcomes:

Participants will:

  • Acquire a working knowledge of the DSM-5-TR diagnoses that present frequently in school and pediatric clinic settings.
  • Learn the primary changes in the organization of and diagnostic process for the DSM-5-TR as compared to previous editions of the DSM.
  • Learn about new disorders and changes in criteria sets for select diagnoses
  • Acquire knowledge about how the DSM-5-TR can be used when determining eligibility for specific categories under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act and the Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973/Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008
  • Review case studies to apply diagnostic decision-making skills
  • Learn about recent research supporting the need for increased mental health services to children and adolescents
